1948年德蕾莎修女感受到来自上帝的呼召，要她为「最穷」的人（poorest of the poor）服务。於是，她离开了她住了二十几年的修道院，她脱下了厚重的欧洲式修女道袍，换上了一件像印度农妇所穿白色蓝边的衣服，她从此走出了高墙，走到穷人之中！德蕾莎修女的一生一直为穷人服务，1997年9月6日她与世长辞了，全球都为她的死感到哀伤。当时，中天新闻评论说∶「她的去世，使穷人的希望破灭┅┅」。我并不同意这样的说法，因为仍然有许多她的继承者，正在为穷人服务。
