Engineers determine that the water leak of radioactive water from reactor 2 is instead coming from a faulty joint where the pit meets a duct, allowing water to seep into a layer of gravel underneath.[152] An injection of 6000 l of polymer coagulant into the pit and surrounding ground appears to successfully seal the leak. [153]
In spite of protests from South Korea and Russia, the government authorizes the release of the 11,500 tons of less radioactive water into the ocean to make a room to store much more contaminated water[152][154]. The government claims that the action does not violate international laws.
Iodine-131 levels reach the 7.5 million times the legal limit in a seawater sample taken near the facility[152].
